Residents Against Dirty Energy (RADE) Burwell is a central resource for information about the proposed gas-powered STOR power station in Reach Road, Burwell.
STOR is an abbreviation of Short Term Operating Reserve. It is a service administered and paid for by the National Grid that enables them to optimise the operating margin on the grid by either increasing power generation or by reducing demand from users.
Twenty 89-litre piston engine generators fuelled by natural gas - equivalent to 1000 car engines. These engines could power two cities around the size of Cambridge or 89,000 homes. The generators will run only in times of peak demand but will produce significant noise and gas pollution.
The site has a natural gas pipeline, an overhead pylon at the correct voltage and a substation nearby, providing the fuel and infrastructure required for the development.
Increased levels of pollution, including nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide (NOx), and carbon monoxide. NOx is the greatest concern and there are legal limits for emissions that this power station may exceed.
Increased levels of noise pollution from the exhausts, the cooling plants and the intakes.
Risk of smog in times of temperature inversions trapping pollutants near the ground in cold, foggy, still weather. At these times electricity demand is likely to be high so the plant will be running.
Risk to local wildlife including bats and barn owls.
Risk of acid damage to local clunch buildings and Devil's Dyke, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
WHAT THIS DOES NOT MEAN FOR US is local power backup specifically for Burwell in times of peak demand. The power generated will be fed into the National Grid to be directed to places where it is needed, such as London.
